Paul Collins is one of those rare authors whose work never disappoints. Although some of his writings are better than others, they are always interesting and imaginative. Having said all that, Dragonlinks is one of his best.

Collins has created a fascinating and intricate world and populated it with strong, well-rounded, convincing characters from the determined heroin, Jelindel, to the power-hungry Preceptor; and all the shades-of-grey characters in between.

The story concerns a young countess who, after the murder of her family, disguises herself as a boy. She joins up with a couple of would-be adventurers and sets out in search of the mystic links needed to complete an all-powerful mailshirt... a mailshirt that is also being sought by other determined and ruthless individuals. Although in many ways this is a traditional quest fantasy, Collins injects the story with much originality and an overall feeling of ‘new-ness’.
