This release is from the recent continuing series of Doctor Who soundtrack CDs from the BBC. Highlighting the electronic music of composer Tristram Cary, it focuses on three Dalek stories, “The Daleks” (1963), “The Daleks’ Master Plan” (1965) and “The Mutants” (1972). Despite being a fan of the show, there’s not much I can say about this double CD that is complimentary. The score for “The Daleks” barely classifies as music ambient, atmospheric, background sound would be a better description. “The Daleks’ Master Plan” is a tad more musical, especially the couple of tracks from Episode 7 (The Feast of Steven). “The Mutants” is even a little more musical. So, I guess the CD is interesting in how is demonstrates the development of musical style in the series. It is, however, extremely monotonous as a CD. The liner notes make the following comment: “This two-disc set, while packed, nevertheless omits Tristram’s two other Doctor Who scores. Tapes of his music for “Marco Polo” (1964) are long-lost, while there was not the space here to include his ballad music for “The Gunfighters” (1966)…” Frankly, I think they would have been better off ditching a chunk of the repetitive stuff that currently on the CD and making room for the more tuneful ballad music. This one is definitely for die-hard fans only. |
