Book 2 in the Heaven and Earth TrilogyBy Richard Harland Earth has been at war with Heaven for a thousand years. The Supreme Trinity has withdrawn to heaven’s highest altitude, leaving a war council of archangels in charge. Portions of heaven’s lower altitudes have broken away and fallen to Earth, making whole continents uninhabitable. And human beings have changed. The artificial Humen, controlled by the Doctors, now dominate the world; with primitive Residuals living parochial lives in small communities. This is the setting for the Heaven and Earth Trilogy of young adult novels begun with Ferren and the Angel. As with the first novel we are plunged into a fascinating world of angels, modified humans and a seemingly unending war. The story revolves around Ferren, a young residual, and his friendship with Miriael, an angel wounded in battle and now stranded on Earth. In this book they attempt to set up an alliance of Residual tribes to oppose the Humen, while having to deal with a terrifyingly new Doctor the giant Dr Saniette. Pacey, well written and thoroughly enthralling, it left me desperately wanting more. The inclusion of a snippet from the final book, Ferren and the Invasion of Heaven, is a cruel bit of carrot-waving. |
